Haunted Northumberland

Ghost Stories Of Northumberland

The legend of the White Lady,
From The Cresswell Tower!

On a cold grey night by the Northumbrian sea
A lonesome figure is sometimes seen ,
Pining for her lovers hold.
But by her family he was murdered cold,
This sad story now is told,
To freeze the blood and make the senses cold.

Watching from the lonely heights,
forever staring at the sea below,
She is waiting for his return,
Is she not to know?,
But have pity if you hear her eerie cry,
As she does witness her lover die.

Whenever will she be free?
Whenever will the sun shine on the sea?
For she now can but wail and freeze the air,
Whilst leading those who see or hear to sheer dispair,
Broken hearted, her appearance gaunt,
The Cresswell Tower she is doomed to haunt.

The Cresswell Tower lies close to a caravan site appx 8 miles south east of Morpeth, The White Ladies' Lover was alleged to have been murdered on what is now the car park, by her brothers.

The tower survives today, but on certain nights they say she can be seen staring below waiting for her lover to return into her arms. Although she seemed to have witnessed this, she still waits for his return.
