Recent News

Last year a Mr Justice Underhill dismissed a case by Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council, which argued that the Government did not have the powers to carry out a local authority review and the process was unfair.

"Northumberland County Council, which proposed the change, welcomed the courts ruling, saying it will help to end uncertainty?" and then proceeded with the backing of a most despicable central Government progressed to a unitary council.

So it appeared that even the courts could not hold back one of the biggest political disgraces in recent years and the then Labour Council, along with help from the Government and even the courts themselves, walked with the damnable contempt it has so consistently shown towards the electorate over the years.

However what remains absolutely clear that this was a decision that the electorate simply did not want and Labour were turfed out of overall control in Northumberland for the first time in thirty years.

Following this decision key statements were made by the Castle Morpeth Borough Council.

These were
1.     The way in which the people in Northumberland have been treated is disgraceful.

2.     District Councils have not been Given a fair opportunity by the Secretary of State Hazel Blears.

3.     The public consultation process has been nothing more than a sham

4.     This is a stitch up for Northumberland

In view of this and other research we still believe a stance should be made agaisnt the infliction of a unitary council in Northumberland, the so called ICON and shadow Government which appeared in teh white paper should not be supported and boycotted as undemocratic in principle.

Unitary Council Decision

Since Both the Governmentand County decided to take Northumberland to a "Single Unitary Council" a clear message should be sent back to Government. If you value the North East votes in the next election then relook into this. This decision was not made by a democratic choice it was by dictat by an arrogant uncompramising and electorally ignorant Government and a home secretary who has not one ounce of knowledge about our County, Hazel Blears neither lives nor works in this County, yet has inflicted a decision on us which not only loses a whole tier of democracy but also reduces public accountability and access to local councillors. Indeed Where has the public consultation been for such a changeover been and how many people even now have the relevantinformation as regards this Council's intention as regards the proposed new layout of none elected forums (ICON) and details of the proposed wholesale sell off of community assets. This is still the hidden agenda behind these proposals.

The one reason why it has been allowed to go ahead has been the reason that it will save taxpayers money, this is the biggest deception yet that has come from this Government.

The County Council under its last leadership deceived the public on a number of occasions, over the middle school system and the decision to close the care homes at Essendene and The Mount a decision notably made behind closed doors despite the concerns of the different communities. The decision to change to a Unitary Council is unacceptable and still MUST be fought at every level. Aside this there is the risk of the loss of public sector jobs, and there undoubtedly will be an under representation of democracy in the rural areas.

Surely it is important that, even now, we stand and say that we do not want to be dictated to by central Government or County as to how our local democracy is arranged.

What is also very apparent, is that in recent years, Labour has achieved very little for the North East, they have failed successively to provide proper funding, business solutions and long term employment and now they are about to destroy our democratic infrastructure. They have even failed to obtain simple funding for school transportation alongside closing well run Community Care Homes is this the party you really still want to represent Northumberland? in the future?.
