It would not be surprising to note that Britian was at war at the turn of the last century. At this time we were at war with the Boers.
Britain itself though was about to embark on a new age, that of the motor car.
Queen Victoria was coming to the end of her reign and Edward VII would be crowned King in the year 1901.
As far as music was concerned the music halls were still packing in the public with their song and dance routines. In America a struggling young artist Scott Joplin was slowly becoming recognised after having studied at the George R. Smith College in Sedalia US.
However the age of the great waltzes was about to become the great age of jazz and the big dance bands. Music in this century was to change like never before. Indeed Strauss, Beethoven, Brahms, Grieg were to gradually lose their overall appeal as the public welcomed the new age, but before then tragedy and further war would leave it's mark.
